Pushing a kayak or canoe into the water for an afternoon is a super way to depart from life’s stressors. But did you know the Endomondo Sports Tracker can come along?

Pick kayaking from the ‘Choose Sport’ menu, click play/start, and the app documents how long a canoeist/kayaker has been out, distance traveled, and general calories burned. And if you run into trouble while on the water, the Endomondo app actually serves as a real-time safety tool others can use to find your last recorded map location.

Ryno Lamont, an Endomondo user from South Africa, said: “I use the Endomondo Sports Tracker on my smartphone to keep me on track paddling the coastal waters of Cape Town. The live tracking feature enables my friends to encourage me with text messages and it provides piece of mind to my family tracking my route progress.”

But before you put a smartphone into a boat, precautions should be taken. First, purchase a dry sack to hold electronic devices. There are many different dry sacks on the market, but think about selecting one that is clear so you can visually check a smartphone while paddling. No matter what brand you selected, leave air in the sack so the package will float if it finds a way into the water. And while this next suggestion may be overly cautious, we also propose people splurge for a waterproof smartphone case. Many such cases are available and almost all cost less than the price of a new phone. And when it comes to protecting your data and gadget, it’s much better to be overly cautious.

Now that you secured your smartphone and can operate Endomondo, here are a few tips for using the app.

1) Turn up the volume on your smartphone before placing it in the watertight bag. This allows users to hear audio feedback, and makes it easier to control music volume if you’re using Bluetooth technology.
2) Once you’ve found a point of interest or obstacle to be avoided, simply paddle in a circle to create a map ‘mark’ noted by Endomondo. This allows users to remember a scenic point or troublesome hurdle, and the notation can be shared with others in the kayaking/canoeing community.
3) Share canoeing/kayaking experience on the Endomondo social fitness network. This allows others to find great paddling places and get insight on tricky spots.

The Endomondo Sports Tracker adds an interesting stratum to canoeing/kayaking that wasn’t available years ago. And the Endomondo social fitness network can generate a worldwide kinship for paddlers never before possible. So shove off and give Endomondo a try, but be sure to keep your smartphone dry.
