So, you’ve booked your trip and you’re finally going on that dream getaway you’ve been planning. But, before you head to the airport, remember to pack your workout gear! You heard right. Just because you’re going on vacation doesn’t mean you have to (or should) put your training on hiatus.
While taking a needed break from work is good, taking one from your workout routine while you’re on holiday is not a great idea, since you can lose your progress much quicker than you’d probably expect. Just one week of inactivity can put a damper on your fitness.
We don’t mean to stress you out, especially when the whole point of going on vacation is to relax, but just keep in mind that a little activity can go a long way to keep you on track. And to really stay on track, you’ll want to keep track of those workouts, right? But using all that data probably doesn’t seem like a great idea either.
Well, here’s a little tip to help solve this dilemma: when you’re abroad, you can keep tracking with your app…and, no, that doesn’t mean we want you to waste your precious data. You can actually track all your workouts without using your data connection at all. To track your vacation workouts, all you need to do is to turn on your phone’s GPS — a GPS signal is free of charge, so this won’t cost you anything.
Remember to turn off your cellular data though, since not only does that help save your battery, but you’ll be making sure you won’t be racking up roaming costs. Using just your phone’s GPS, your app can still track your metrics such as distance, duration, speed, pace, mile/kilometer and splits. Pretty neat, huh?
Your data will get saved on your phone and will be uploaded to endomondo.com the next time you have a data connection, like when you reach your hotel’s Wi-Fi range. (To get even more Wi-Fi options, search for apps that use your phone’s GPS to find free Wi-Fi hotspots near you).
Just connect to the network and fire up your Endomondo app to upload your data, as well as any great pics of the amazing sights you’ve added to your workout. There are some setbacks when using your app without a data connection. Certain features such as Peptalks and maps won’t be available when you’re not connected to a data network, and it will take a little longer to get a GPS fix, so you won’t get the full Endomondo experience you’re used to.
Still, we hope this doesn’t keep you from taking your app out with you, because we’re sure it doesn’t want to be left out of your vacation. For our full guide on tracking sans data, check out our FAQ.
Have fun freeing your endorphins abroad!
