A few days ago, we were contacted by a very happy Endomondo user, Gary, who had just proposed to his fiancée in a really creative way. Rather than simply getting down on one knee, he decided to track the question using his Endomondo app.
We asked Gary how he came up with this unique proposal and he answered that “the seed for the idea for the message actually came from a television commercial I saw where a bicycle courier or the like drew a big heart for his girlfriend. I can’t remember the sponsor, or how the image made it to the map, but it occurred to me that with Endomondo, you could actually write a message.”
So, as he got ready to pop the big question to his then girlfriend Lorinda, he knew he had to do something “unique and personal and BIG”. He wanted to propose on Lorinda’s birthday, so he planned ahead and spent a couple of weeks with Google maps searching the local area for the perfect spot where he could write out the message.
He told us that initially, he wanted to run the route, but that since he had to meet Lorinda for dinner the evening that he planned on proposing, he didn’t want to show up exhausted after the 4 hours he would have had to run to write out the question! We can’t fault him for opting to bike the workout instead.
So, armed with his printout of the course he had mapped earlier, he took the afternoon off work, aired up the tires in his bike and headed over to the starting point. He rode the proposal workout and prepared himself to share the question with her that day.
At dinner that evening, he confessed that he had taken the afternoon off work and gone for a bike ride without her. He then shared the link to the Endomondo workout and asked her to look at it on her phone. She looked at her screen, saw the message, and after getting over the surprise, gave him her answer…”of course!”
For the record, she tracked her response later on too:
How they met
Gary and Lorinda were introduced by a friend of Lorinda’s that was a music coach. See, aside from being avid cyclists, this harmonious couple is also part of a musical group. At first, their bond was purely platonic, but as we all know, friendships often develop into something more. After years of being great friends and making music together, they discovered that they had fallen in love somewhere along the way.
When we asked her about the proposal, she said: “Gary is an engineer, and everything he does is uniquely Gary. I had no idea what to expect by way of a proposal from him, but I can tell you that never in a million years would I have dreamed of this! I think it makes it even more special that he spent a couple of hours, rode over 16 miles, and burned over 1000 calories to propose, and if it’s possible, it made me love him even more”.
They now live with their cat, Sou, and enjoy cycling as well as just about everything else they can dream up together.
We’re sending a big congratulations to Gary and Lorinda! We wish this wonderful couple a lifetime of happiness, great rides and fun adventures together!
