Meet the New Endomondo for Android

You know how you workout extra hard to show off your beach bod once summer rolls around? Well, we’ve been working extra hard on our appearance lately too. Our Android app got a makeover and we really hope you like the new look!

There are several reasons for updating the look and feel. First of all, we’ve listened to all the user feedback and even though our users are generally very happy with our Android app (average rating is 4.5+ out of 5), we wanted to do better. Secondly, we wanted the Endomondo experience to be consistent with the experience on other apps on Android and therefore, we’ve done our best to implement the new design guidelines on the platform. Last but not least, the old navigation did not allow us to add the cool features we have planned for the future. The new navigation and design will, so stay tuned!

Below is an overview of the main changes and the specific user feedback we’re addressing:

TRACKER

Pause the workout before stopping it:
A lot of users have reported that they sometimes accidentally stop a workout because the Stop button is just one click away. The new Play/Pause/Stop button makes this much less likely to happen.

Endomondo For Android

HISTORY

Toggle between summary showing total distance, total duration and total calories for days with more than one workout
This new feature will quickly give you an overview of your totals on days with two or more workouts.

Workout History

Get a better overview of the summary for each workout
We’ve spiced up the workout summary to give you a better overview of your performance.

Workout Summary

ROUTES

Rate routes and view the overall ratings in percent as well as the number of likes/dislikes
We have so many routes on Endomondo by now that we’ve almost lost count. To help you find the best ones, you can now see the overall rating of routes and you can rate routes yourself.

See who of your friends also followed a route
When you click on a route, you can see who else of your friends have been out following that specific route.

Manage your favorite routes
Tag and un-tag your favorite routes so you can easily access them from the app.

View Best Time and Distance to Route for each route
We’ve added two new pieces of information to our routes. One is the Best Time, i.e., what is the best performance on the route yet and another is the distance to the route from where you are located right now – this comes in handy if you want to follow a route nearby.

Route Summary

NEWS FEED

Get a better overview of friends’ activities
We’ve changed the design to make it more clear what your friends have been up to and which peptalks and comments they‘ve received.

Publish workout notes in news feed
Workout notes added from our website are now being published in the news feed of the app. We’ve added this feature to make sure that you have a tool for sharing your bad excuses when you don’t perform as expected ;-)

Click on a friend in the news feed to see his or her workout list
We’ve added a new feature to allow you to see what your friends have been up to from within the app.

Let us know what you think on Facebook or in the comments!

Please add HR zones and voice notification about changing HR zone

yeees, HR Zones and at least voice notifications about HR frequency. At least in the pro Version…., would make my training so much easier… (the other apps have something like that , but fail on other topics….) With that Endomondo would be the first “complete” running app. would love to see this in Endomondo

Yes, please add HR zones. This really would make the app perfect, now I’m still looking around for an app that has that.

HR zones would be real nice!

  2. Initially I preferred the former layout, but why is it not possible to add a manually training pass like in the iPhone app?

HR zones would be epic, for me, this is the only thing the app is missing, voice notification would make HR training a breeze

  7. Great app. If you add screen rotation will be great!

    July 9, 2012
  8. Can we add a quit button ASAP? I can’t believe it’s released without anyone noticing there is now no way to exit the app, so that it perpetually stays in your notification bar saying it’s running. I have to go into app management and forcibly stop it to quit.

    • Jonathan Quist #

Same as in previous versions, just keep clicking the “back” button, when you back out of the home screen, it shuts everything down.

This is very handy (actually, critical) behavior for things like pulling up another app while waiting for GPS to sync. In my case, the last thing I do before starting the Endomondo workout is pull up a metronome app to check my target cadence. And sometimes I send my wife an IM to let her know when I’ll be available again…

Better interface is great, so would be better GPS sensitivity. Until now I stopped to use Endo app (I love Endo website) because of lack of gps tracking reliability with the android app.

    • Sandris #

The GPS accuracy depends on your phone, not app. It also depend on where you keep it while running or cycling. I don’t recommend to keep it in pocket. Use a neck strap for running, or phone holder for bike while cycling. :)

      July 16, 2012
  13. The new look is cleaner. It’s a little sluggish changing pages on my HTC Tattoo. What I can’t see is how you exit now

The new versions 8.0.0, incredible change!, The design is spectacular, shame that the voices are not in Spanish (this is a point), now would fail a change to the website …

  17. David #

Sad to say, I think the new GUI is a step back. Yes, it has more “Eye candy”, but Endomondo is a “working” app where functionality ALWAYS comes before graphics. I really don’t like the “menu” for switching views, hate the huge start button, that makes everything else invisible, hate the new maps… I’ll be installing back the 7 version.

    July 10, 2012
    • Jonathan Quist #

Please post if you figure out how to do that. I can’t find the old version, and 8.0.0 keeps crashing and taking other apps with it…

      July 15, 2012
  18. looks great! but please… how do we know a workout has successfully uploaded? no notification?

    July 10, 2012
  19. Flo #

How do I exit the app? I used to get that option pressing “menu” on my phone. I can’t find it now. I have no need to keep Endomondo running all day/night.

    • djkosmick #

      Hi Flo,
do you use a samsung Galaxy? You press the botton 2 seconds, then, on the bottom right, exit endomondo, or even all the running apps at the same time.

is there a way to go back to 7.1?
    fuctionality has decreased significantly.
been using it mainly for cycling, but now screen is much harder to read, especially under direct sunlight. also much more difficult to switch between screens.

only obvious improvement the much easier start/countdown button.

add support for barometer in the list of welcome future features.

    July 10, 2012
  23. Mark Smith #

I cant find the button to close the app. You moved it. It is driving me nuts that this has been running since it downloaded. HOW DO YOU CLOSE IT?

    July 10, 2012
  24. Mike #

You can ‘quit’ any Android app (including Endomondo) by pressing the back button until you’ve backed out to the previous app (which is usually the home screen).

The Endomondo icon will then disappear from the notification bar.

    July 10, 2012

HR zones and also GPS lost alarm.
This should be realy VERY VERY easy to add guys, so what are you waiting for?
Endomondo is great, but these features will make it really complete !

Like Endomondo pro, specially the outlook of last version and use it.practically every day.
However even you have auto pause , it does not stop, my HR monitor (Garmin) can not be captured for no reason( have changed batttery etc etc) Maybe these things can be improved when new update is released?

    July 10, 2012
  27. Leaving the app is as simple as clicking on the back button (from the workout activity/page) twice.
Maybe your phone lacks the back button?

I like the new layout, but like Flo I cannot quit! can anyone help?

  32. The app looks good and my gps seems to finally work with it again! BUT this app uses way too much of my cpu while running (this is the case since 7, even got an alert it was at 99.9%) also it couldn’t find my HR belt. So i’m forced to go back to an other app.

You could quit the old version so a quit option should be here too. In fact the same thing was in the new android version of Spotify, you could quit in the previous version but not anymore. Please add the option like it was in the old version too.

  37. I like the new App. Good fresh Design, Good improvement of the start/stopp-button.

I want to use Endomondo and track my heart-rate. I use it on an HTC-Desire. Which product should I buy? I ve seen some bluetooth-belts, which would work. Now I have read, that these products run very fast out of battery, also my phone would do this, cause of useing the blue-tooth.
I found from “runtastic and beurer” o whole set, with a very nice dongle. So I can put the dongle in the headphone place and then it doesn’t use any bluetooth.
But this one seems to be for runtastic. Do I find something similar for endomondo, or does this one run with endomondo?
And on the other way, how do I use HR in Endomondo. Is where a voice-notification, or do I have to unlock it and press around, every time?

I third the request for Lock Screen, I ran at an event last sunday and having to unlock screen while some moisture was between touchscreen and arm band was painful. I ended up cancelling the workout halfway through and didn’t realize for several minutes later.

Since this new design (im using Endomondo Pro on Galaxy S III), the app has stopped 2 or 3 times for no reason during my running ! Awful ! probably a big bugg. Did someone noticed that ? I will give one more chance to Endomondo this week, and if it happends again, then i’ll run with MapMyRun, but i hate MapMyRun, coz they send to many spams and adds.

I like the new UI however on Interval training there is only a series of beeps now to separate the different intervals, on the previous version there was also voice giving me information about the interval I was doing. (which was much louder than the beeps)
I do not wear earphones when running and some the routes I do are next to busy roads, I would very much like the voice to come back again and possibly have the function to make my phone vibrate to separate the intervals also.

    August 2, 2012
    • Chris #

After reinstalling my voice app the audio coach now works. Its odd though that starting and finishing a run uses my phones default vioce but the interval timings use the voice app I have.

      September 1, 2012
    • dean seifert #

And an ability to record different interval sound bites to queue different exercises. The current functionality simply states lo, medium or hi interval – the ability to name the different intervals + soundbite would make the interval feature truly complete.

I would appreciate the possibility to either have to confirm before exiting the app or to be able to completely disable the back-button-exit functionality.
I recently was in a bike race and recieved an sms that popped up in front of the app. To get rid of it I hit the back button and either I pushed it twice or Endomondo took the back button push as a signal to exit the app. Either way – my tracking got interrupted and I had to start it over.
That said, I would also appreciate the possibility to link several interrupted sessions into one.

Endo Pro User. Everything looks good but still in this version there is not elevation indication on the mobile app and we need to wait after the upload to the web to know it.
I use it for several sports in the mountain, hiking, mountain biking, skiing and the elevation is the first information I need after a workout.
    Please add it.

    Thanks

Nice fresh look! A bit harder to read in sunlight. Not an issue for me, as I mostly push the headset button to get updates, but I am thinking about mounting it on a bike – and I guess the old interface would be better for this purpose. Perhaps add an alternative high contrast or dock mode?

Still waiting for HR zone with voice notification. And please add Crossfit to exercises. :)

I’m a bit late with this. Today I went on my first outing with the new look app. I wish I could say I liked it but, to repeat what someone further up said, I’m after functionality rather than eye candy. This new version is hard to read, usability is reduced and that large button is out of proportion – just looks awkward. In fact, for all the ‘eye candy’ I don’t actually think it looks better.

But at least you are trying to improve the app and I appreciate all your efforts (I just wish I could go back to the previous version though!).

Endomodo Pro on a Samsung Galaxy Note running ICS.

Used for walking, not running (i.e. much slower speed…)

Is anybody else having issues with speed at a walking pace and constant “Paused”/”Resumed” notifications?

As much as I would like to believe it, there’s no way I can walk at 6.5 mph… -) The speed readout is all over the place compared to my Garmin 310.

At first I thought the “Paused”/”Resumed” notfications were something to do with tree cover, but there are also plenty of them when I’m out in the open.

    Am I the only one?

One thing to keep in mind for any tracking tool on a phone, and probably on purpose-build GPS watches: GPS accuracy is _not_ that great. I don’t believe there is any GPS tracker app that is accurate enough for serious training. But if you take the end result over the course of a workout, the average value will be roughly correct. The longer the workout, the more likely the total distance covered is accurate.

If you are walking, I’d suggest disabling the auto-pause feature (again, this is not just Endomondo, this is any tracking app). You can get a reasonably accurate course distance using a tool such as gmap-pedometer. Your total elapsed time, assuming you start and stop Endomondo promptly, should be fairly accurate. You can compute your average pace from that. Or, even easier, go to the Endomondo web site, edit your workout, and correct the tracked distance with the computed distance. Most of the rest will be done for you.

I have to note – after upgrading my work phone from a DROID X with Android 2.2 to a DROID Maxx with 4.04, Endomondo reliability seems to have improved greatly. It may just be the additional memory in the device, or it may be differences in the OS. I’m not sure, I just know that I’m getting happy with it again. But still wish I could go back to Endomondo 7!

I would love it if you guys could find a way to add mileage tracked per pair of shoes. My goal is to use a pair of running shoes for 300-500 miles and then retire them. Your app could keep track of the mileage accrued on each pair. In your app, I would add my shoes to my electronic list of shoes, then on the main screen I would use a pull-down list to select the shoes to be worn on that next run. Your app would need a way to retire pairs of shoes so they stop appearing in the drop-down list once they have been retired. Please feel free to contact me about this, especially if my attempt at brevity has made this confusing. Thanks for the great app.

Option to keep screen from locking is essential! Fingers get sweaty and prevent me from unlocking screen during spinning and it sloes me down!

If you use Android, you can use Tasker to prevent locking when using Endomondo. Works perfect!

        Thanks. What is Tasker?

Tasker is an app where you can more or less make your phone act on any sort of event. These are a few tasks that I am using:

No screen lock code when Endomondo is running up front
No screen lock code when the phone is connected with Bluetooth to my car stereo
Read incoming SMS out loud when I am having the earphones plugged in
Send a dismissive SMS to my colleague if he sends me messages late on the weekend
Set volume to 70% when I plug in earphones
Activate WiFi when I am connected to the cells close to my home
And that’s only a fraction of what you can do. The Endomondo task is the one I use the most though.

If you look for it in Googles App Store, you will find it. It can be a little tricky to get the hang of the app to begin with buy there’s plenty of help forums if you just google around a bit.

Sounds exactly like my kind of app! I am a front end developer myself – and I like events!

  76. I use endomondo on my iPhone (as well as my garmin800) on my bike which works fine.
My wife runs and has a galaxy s2 – she said she can’t hear the volume. It appears she doesn’t have the same option of increasing the volume within the app.

    Am I missing something obvious??

    Hello Endomondo!
Is it possible to add and show the actual percentage of maximum HR during workouts? During Spinning Workouts you often want to follow the program that is based on percentage of your maximum HR
    Thanks for your reply :)

Another vote here for lockscreen controls and summary. It would be great to get a customisable field or two (avg pace, distance, etc) while the screen is locked.
